On January 1 and 2, 2020 we will perform an intrusive overhaul of the /home, /strw0 and /software file systems. This has impact on both Sterrewacht and Institute Lorentz computers. These file systems will be served from the new virtual server environment, and the switch has impact on every Desktop or Server with a Linux based operating system.

To facilitate the switch we need to stop all processes writing to the old file systems, perform a synchronization between the old en new file systems, and then switch over to using the new ones. This means that:

• January 1, 2020 at about 23:59 the mail servers (STRW and Lorentz) will stop serving mail.
• During the night the synchronization between the file systems will take place (takes at least 6 hours)
• In the morning of January 2, the new file systems will be made default
• Mail servers will be started again
• All desktops and servers will need forceful dismount of the old file system and a mount of the new ones. In worst case this may involve a reboot.

We expect that during January 2, all systems will be back in full operations.
