Printers

Members of the Institute can print on any of the following printers

NameLocationTypeModel
lorentz_big Corridor Oort 2nd floor Color HP Color LaserJet 5520dn
lorentz_medium Corridor Oort 2nd floor Color HP Color LaserJet M553
lorentz_small Corridor Oort 2nd floor Color HP Color Laserjet 3000dn
oort1-color Corridor Oort 1st floor Color HP Color LaserJet cp2025

GNU/Linux workstations

All Lorentz Institute printers have been pre-configured and are ready to be used on your GNU/Linux workstation. These should appear in a drop-down menu of the print panel of the software you are using to print.

From the terminal

Use lpstat to display a list and state of available printers

lpstat -p

Print a document with lpr

lpr -P<printer_name> <document>

IP addresses and hostnames of the printers can be obtained using

$ lpstat -v

Mac OS desktops and laptops

Connect to the UL-STRW-LION wireless network or a cabled connection if that is available in your office.

Use the CUPS (http://localhost:631) software to install any of the IL printers.

For instance to install the lorentz_medium printer do:

  • select the administration tab
  • add new printer
  • select ipp printer
  • use
ipp://printers.lorentz.leidenuniv.nl/printers/lorentz_medium
  • select the right manufacturer (HP in this case)
  • select the IPP everywhere driver from the drivers list
  • push add to finalise
  • optionally you can configure the printer to print double side

Should you want to add any of the printers mentioned in the table above, use the following connection scheme

ipp://printers.lorentz.leidenuniv.nl/printers/<printer-name>

and use either the driver appropriate for the printer model (see table above) or the IPP everywhere driver.

Printing from Laptops and other mobile devices

In principle you could use all the steps mentioned above for the Mac users. If your device does not have cups, you could use any software that is available on your client to set up printers.

The only important thing to bear in mind is that you should be connected to UL-STRW-LION. Other wireless networks will not allow you to print on the IL printers.
