This is an old revision of the document!
As of the 16th of September 2016 the wireless network HLOortNetwork has been discontinued. Please use `UL-STRW-LION' when using your personal device.
All Lorentz Institute printers have been pre-configured and are ready to be used on your GNU/Linux workstation.
To display a list and state of available printers from your GNU/Linux workstation use lpstat
lpstat -p
and to print a document
lpr -P<printer_name> <document>
Some printers might have access restrictions.
IP addresses and hostnames of the printers can be obtained using
$ lpstat -v
You can also find valuable information here.
Members of the Institute can print on any of the following printers
Name | Location | Type |
---|---|---|
lorentz_big | Corridor Oort 2nd floor Color | HP Color LaserJet 5520dn |
lorentz_medium | Corridor Oort 2nd floor Color | HP Color LaserJet M55 |
lorentz_small | Corridor Oort 2nd floor Color | HP Color Laserjet 3000dn |
oort1-color | Corridor Oort 1st floor Color | HP Color LaserJet cp2025 |
Follow the following steps.
Your wireless card will probably detect the presence of one of more of the following networks
Connect to either UL-STRW-LION or HLOortNetwork. Upon successful binding try opening your browser and visiting a web page, for instance http://physicsworld.com/. You should be re-directed to a university web portal in which you will be able to authenticate. Fill in your credentials and upon successful authentication you will be ready to browse the internet freely.
For instance:
domain: LORENTZ
Username: your-lorentz-username
Password: your-lorentz-passwd
Add a new printer. This procedure differs for different operating systems. Please refer to your device manual for help or contact us.
The only important note is that you should configure the printer connection using the institute printer server
printers.lorentz.leidenuniv.nl
.
If your device allows you to specify a web address for the printer, then you can use http://printers.lorentz.leidenuniv.nl:631/printers/<printer-name>
where <printer-name> is one the Lorentz Institute printers (see below).
If your device requests that printers be configured via the ipp protocol, then you can enter
Host: printers.lorentz.leidenuniv.nl
Queue: printers/<printer-name>
lpr -P<printer> myfile.ps
here.
