Since this is a potentially dangerous operation, remote access is only possible using a tunneling mechanism provided by the Tunnlier program. How to setup your Home Windows Desktop or personal Windows Laptop is described below. Note, that you may potentially work with personal or GDPR (AVG) restricted data. In that case make sure you adhere to the rules outline by the GDPR.

Before you can start to take over your Windows Desktop or lab computer at work from Home, you need to do the following:

  • Inform helpdesk@physics.leidenuniv.nl that you intend to use this functionality and provide:
    • The name of your desktop
    • Your Physics account name
  • Check your personal Home Desktop or Windows Laptop for any virusses or malware.

The windows one virusscanner is ok, and if you do not see a pop-up telling you the virus scanner is not running, you can safely assume it is running (Click windows button → settings → Update & Security → Windows Security → Open Windows Defender Security Center and verify 'Virus & threat protection' is activated).
    • You install and run the program Malware Bytes Free Addition https://nl.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/ and verify your machine is clean.
  • For PHYSICS: Now you install the Tunneling software Tunnelier and follow the instrunction in
  • For STRW: Now you install the Tunneling software Tunnelier and follow the instrunction in

If you have problems setting up the connection or configuring the software, please drop by at the Computer group HL406.
